Music maestro AR Rahman has apologized for a 'disappointing' anthem for Commonwealth Games (CWG).

"The anthem, which I did, was tested on younger generation. I knew it will take longer if I have to include all the generations from 71 countries. Some people didn't like it...and the song landed up in a huge controversy, " Rahman said in an interview to NDTV news channel.

"But I wanted to test it on the opening ceremony, which was great, and got lovely feedback from Australia, England and other countries. They just loved the song. So, in a way, I think it served the purpose, " the Oscar -winner said.

He further said: "Next time I would be more careful to reach out to all the generations, include classical tunes." "Sorry India if I let anybody down. But definitely I am proud of the song. It didn't satisfy everyone, but I just tried my best, " Rahman added.

On Aug 16, Rahman launched Swagatham', theme song for Commonwealth Games 2010 after the Group of Minister (GoM) on the Games approved the tune on Aug 15.

Dedicating the song to Mahatma Gandhi, Rahman said it is not Shakira's Waka Waka type, the official song of FIFA World Cup 2010, but "it is full of energy". Rahman said that he expects the entire nation to participate in the song with him.

The 'Mozart of Madras' said: "I have been working on the song for the past six months."

The Oscar winner's song was sung at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in October 3 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

However, the song failed to impress Indians, who were expecting Rahman to repeat the magic of 'Vande Mataram' and 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
