"When I came to the industry there were many better actors at that time but my strength was in the fact that I was original self, " he said to the audience present at an interactive session conducted by FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and industry) Ladies Organization (FLO), Kolkata.
Kher asserted that he could reach his goal and position as he portrayed his own self without resorting to 'pretending'.
"I made it because I was myself, Shah Rukh Khan could make it as he was himself, in life one makes it because of his attitude, " he said.
"If you want to live a free self you have to be original, " Kher said.
"I can be very unhappy by feeling that why I am not Robert D'Niro or Jack Nicholson, but I am happy by the fact that how many people want to be me, " he added.
He also revealed that an actor leaves the deepest impression on their audience in their first film.
The 55-year-old actor had began his B-town career with the 1984 movie Saaransh, where he played a much older character, which earned him oodles of critical acclaim.
Kher, also having starred in many a duds, said that one should deal with success in the same manner as they deal with failures in life.
An FLO executive said that the session with the veteran actor was organised for learning about Kher, his contribution to Bollywood and the world of cinema and about the facts that motivated him towards the job.

Anupam shared the ways in which a person can motivate his self and live a beautiful life.
