Lyricist Sameer has accused Sonu Nigam of being "high-handed" after the singer reportedly refused to sing one of his songs saying it was "vulgar".
"I don't understand why Sonu had to make such a big issue out of it. If he felt that the song did not conform to his taste, he should have politely declined to sing it. Besides
the song is in no way vulgar. It is purely Sonu's perception, " Sameer said, reports Bollywood Trade.
The song was penned by Sameer for David Dhawan's Salman Khan starrer, which has a song "Shaadi ki pehli pehli raat" (The first night after the wedding).
"It describes the first golden night of marriage and I can't possibly write a bhajan (hymn). But it is in no way vulgar going by today's standards of what is permissible. Sonu
should remember that we are not living in the conventional era any more," Sameer said.
Abhijeet, who was called in to sing the same song, did not find it vulgar, the lyricist said.
"There was a time when double meaning songs were actively endorsed by film-makers, whether it was the 'choli ke peeche' number or 'sar kailo khaitya' number in 'Raja
Babu', which generated a heated debate about the permissible standards of lyrics."
