Even as Vivek Oberoi and Rahul Bose continue to do exemplary work for tsunami victims, more and more film
industry insiders are coming forward to open their hearts and purses out.
While the more high-profile donations for tsunami victims have been extensively discussed, no one knows that
Yash Chopra has donated Rs.5.5 million for their cause. Chopra forbade any person from Yashraj Films from
broadcasting the amount.
"Charity begins at home. It should be known only in the family. Once proclaimed outside, it becomes cheap,"
tells Chopra.
A lot of major personalities, including Karan Johar, Shah Rukh Khan, Subhash Ghai and now Yash Chopra,
have opened up their coffers for tsunami victims.
"But the real battle begins now," warns Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan.
"So many villages apart from the one that Vivek is so wonderfully looking after have been rendered completely
devastated. Fishermen in these villages are on the verge of starvation.
"They'll drink themselves to death if they aren't given boats and nets. Scores of children have been orphaned.
What happens to them? They'll be lured into prostitution if they aren't rehabilitated."
Kamal Haasan has joined hands with several organisations to look into to the future of tsunami orphans.
"We owe it to them," he says emotionally. "We cannot allow our collective conscience to be quelled by writing
of cheques alone."
The one Bollywood personality who has stood out since the tragedy broke Dec 26 is Vivek. Seldom has any
celebrity's image been reverted so dramatically by a natural calamity.
Says his colleague from Tamil Nadu, Madhavan: "You should come down here (to Tamil Nadu) to see how
Vivek is regarded in these parts. The work he has done is beyond praise. It's a miracle of humanity. And to
suggest that Vivek did it to get a few lines about himself written in the papers is downright sick.
"I want to ask all those who are questioning his motives to please come down to the ravaged villages and try to
look into the eyes of those little children who have overnight lost everything. Vivek has done what very few of us
have the time, guts or inclination to do."
Adds Karan Johar: "I guess we all have our own way of dealing with tragedy, personal or national. Vivek and
Rahul have done the industry proud."
