Like in the film, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and others, the five-member gang usually entered a bank or a jewellery shop together, police said.
Their modus operandi was simple - while some posed as blind men to distract the security guard, the rest cornered other employees on the premises. After gathering all employees together at gunpoint, the gang made away with valuables.
They usually targeted small rural banks and establishments located in isolated areas, police said.
The gang had robbed seven banks in different parts of Mumbai and neighbouring areas. Most of the banks were small cooperative banks whose strong rooms could easily be accessed.
The gang was busted last week after ringleader Firoz Shirazuddin Shaikh was nabbed following a trap at his home. The hunt is on to look for the others.
Officials said Shaikh and his associates had watched "Aankhen" several times and acted according to the script though none of the gang members were visually handicapped.
