Veteran director S A Chandrasekharan of Tamil Film Directors Association, which includes icons like K
Balachander and Bharatiraja said the film industry has decided not to allow the protest by ''Tamil Protection
Movement'' to snowball into a crisis. Surya, who has been ''targetted'' along with Kamal Hassan was
non-commital. ''I don't want to comment on it again'', he said.
The reason being that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was critical of the leaders of the ''Tamil
Protection Movement'' for precipitating an unnecessary controversy. She has observed that there is nothing
in Law which prohibits English titles for Tamil films.
Noted lyricist poet and Sahitya Academy award winner Viramuthu said that the ''decision to title a Tamil film
in Tamil has to be done ''consciously''.
''You cannot protect it as per law because there is no law prohibiting an English title for a Tamil film. But you
can protect Tamil with a consciousness to do so'', he tells.
Mr Viramuthu said one cannot protest if a Tamil film is titled, for instance, ''New York'' or '' Bin Laden''
''because they are proper nouns.'' ''But merely titling a Tamil film in English expecting Box Office success is
not sound logic because there is no guarantee that it would become a hit'', he said.
