"Believe it or not that's Gulzarsaab at his funniest, wittiest fun-loving," smiles director Shaad Ali as he shoots an item song for Bunty Aur Babli.
"With this song, we've wrapped up nearly the entire shoot? Just one more song to be shot in Ladakh and that's it. Shankar-Ehsan-Loy have out-composed themselves in this particular song."
I share Shaad's enthusiasm. Everyone on the sets is humming the catchy qawwalli, while Aishwarya Rai, clearly the queen bee on the floor is being instructed with ultra-nazaakat (grace) by choreographer Vaibavi Merchant.
The set resembles an extra-large sundae oozing psychedelic colours on a Sunday afternoon.
"This number is purely for the masses," Shaad whispers, as Abhishek joins Ash on the popsicle-coloured floor. The senior Bachchan has just arrived.
"It's like nothing I've experienced before? But it's show time again. Time to get back on the dance floor," says Bachchan senior.
Abhishek is already there and once the awesome threesome are on the dance floor , it's party time! They move and sway to the sensuous cadences as the choreographer pilots what's possibly the only item song ever to feature such a starry line-up.
Lest Rani feels left out, she too makes a brief appearance in the course of the song. "First the Bachchans are at the bar, then they move to the dance floor to join Aishwarya Rai who plays a professional entertainer.
This song is my tribute to the cinema of Prakash Mehra. You know songs like Bachchansaab's Apni to aisi taisi (Lawaaris) and Salaam-e-ishq (Muqaddar Ka Sikandar)? Well, this is my tribute to those massy songs from the 1980s," explains Ali.
