According to media reports on Thursday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has reportedly written to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recommending four names, including those of Rekha and Sachin, for the Upper House of the Indian Parliament.
The Congress proposed to nominate Rekha and Sachin in the President's quota.
If Rekha and Sachin give their nods of approval, they will become Members of Parliament (MPs) under a provision of the Indian Constitution that allows the President to nominate 12 members to the RS.
As per media reports, Congress President Sonia Gandhi met Sachin and his wife Anjali at her 10 Janpath residence in New Delhi.
The Congress said the invitation was to congratulate him on his 100th century, sources in the party said Gandhi discussed his proposed nomination.
While an official announcement is awaited, Congress sources said Sachin may not accept the offer.
Meanwhile, reacting to the news, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters on Thursday: "Sachin Tendulkar is a great player. We are proud of him. If he is being nominated, surely he would devote some time to Parliament."
