The non-commercial cinema which was once known as offbeat cinema, is on a roll. Close on the heels of two Indian films Anurag Kashyap's Gangs Of Wasseypur and Ashim Ahulwalia's Miss Lovely being featured in
the competitive sections of Cannes comes the news that Nawazuddin Siddiqui who features in both the films, has last night (May 27) won the best actor award at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) 2012 for his
performance in Mangesh Hadawale's Dekh Indian Circus.
Tanisshtha Chatterjee who plays Nawazuddin's wife in Dekh Indian Circus walked away with the best actress award at the NYIFF.
Lamentably neither Nawazuddin nor Tanisshtha could be present to receive their awards in New York.
Says Tannishtha, "I was shooting in Mumbai. And Nawazuddin is in Cannes. In fact he didn't even know he had won. The award came as complete surprise to both of us, since there were other major films and
performances in competition. "
Tannishtha probably hints at much-hyped Gangs Of Wasseypur which closed the NYIFF and was expected to sweep all the awards.
Says Tannishtha, "The good thing is, the international recognition means there would be more interest for the film at home. Our producers are now locking in a deal with a large corporate house. We'll release Dekh
Circus Dekh in August. "
