'Barfi' also featuring Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D'Cruz earned Rs 58.6 crore just in the opening week, according to reports.
The film surpassed 19 other films to be named India's official entry to the Oscars.
The film received mixed reviews from critics but many in the film world showered praise.
Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has praised the entire cast of recently released film 'Barfi' for their performance in the movie.
Praising lead actors Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, Bachchan tweeted: "Ranbir Kapoor a masterful brilliant performance..Priyanka, simply unbelievable, and Anurag Basu's extraordinary making."
"In 'Barfi', the lovely Ileana d'Cruz in her debut for Hindi film... such a mature and balanced performance..many congratulations, " Big B posted on Twitter.
Bachchan said Indian Cinema is going through a magical phase.
"Indian Cinema, its films, directors, actors, technicians going through a magical phase of a change over.. such exciting times !!" Bachchan tweeted.
Speaking to NDTV, Ranbir Kapoor said, "It feels great. But there's still a long way to go. The Oscars has to select it in the best five nominee's list. We hope to get selected."
Priyanka Chopra, tweeted "Yaaaaaay!!India's official entry to the Oscars!!! Anurag sir, RK, Ills, ronnie, Sid n all! Wish I was in India to share this! Go team!"
The producer and distributor of the film Disney UTV said they were honoured that Barfi! has been selected to represent India as its official entry to the Academy Awards 2013.
