The sessions court Monday adjourned hearing in the case and ordered Khan to be present in person April 29. Salman's lawyer Dipesh Mehta assured the court that the actor, who was shooting for a film in Rajasthan, would appear on that date.
Khan is accused of running over one person and injuring four others while driving under the influence of alcohol on September 27, 2002. The actor was booked under laws pertaining to rash driving and released on a bail of Rs.950.
However, a public interest litigation filed by journalist Nikhil Wagle and social activists Nilu Damle and Sudha Kulkarni of the Mahila Dakshata Samiti in the Bombay High Court challenged the legal provisions that allowed the actor to walk free just a few hours after the incident by posting a bail of Rs.950.
The Bombay High Court had then ordered the actor to pay interim compensation of Rs.1 million to the person killed and substantial amounts to the injured.
Subsequently, when the actor filed an appeal, the court ordered that he be tried under lesser charges.
