Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti Irani on Tuesday filed a defamation complaint against Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam at a Delhi court for making derogatory remarks against her, reports said.

Nirupam on December slammed actor-turned-politician Irani while speaking at a live TV debate and said: "Aap toh TV pe thumke lagati thi, aaj chunavi vishleshak ban gayi (You used to dance on TV and today you have become a political analyst)."

Nirupam later clarified his alleged 'sexist' and derogatory remarks against Irani and said his comments were taken out of context.

"Smriti Irani things (have been) taken out of context (and) people have to see the full debate and understand the context," Nirupam tweeted.
