Cases of sections of the society objecting to music tracks and films are now a dime a dozen. One more such case is for producer Ram Mirchandani's upcoming film, helmed by Bejoy Nambiar.
Members of the Sindhi society have raised an objection to the popular track Damadum mast kalandar being used in the film as an 'item number' and want it to be removed. Incidentally, Mirchandani who is also a Sindhi is under immense pressure from his own society. However, Bejoy has ruled out any alteration in his soon-to-be released project.
A source says, `The song is a huge hit already and Mirchandani was very happy with the response. However, now that his community has raised objections to the song, he is under pressure. He even tried to speak to Bejoy, but in vain.`
Insiders add that Mirchandani meanwhile is trying to meet influential decision makers from his community to gather support for the now popular track.
Mirchandani says, `We have always seen Gujarati, Punjabi, Marathi and even Haryanvi songs being used in Hindi films. This is the first time for a Sindhi song that was originally created in Gujarat in 1952. As a producer I think the song should remain in the film. Bejoy doesn't think the song is demeaning in any way.`
The producer states the song filmed on veteran actress Sarika has been done aesthetically. `Instead of an item girl, National Award winning Sarika is there in the track,` he points out.
However being a Sindhi has piled on added pressure on the producer. Mirchandani adds, `I will be meeting people from the Sindhi panchyat and Sindhi sabha to try and convince them on the matter.
