Juhu police booked Jiah's boyfriend in the wake of her 6-page letter and the allegations by her mother that he and his actor-father Aditya were responsible for her suicide

Sooraj Pancholi, son of actor Aditya Pancholi, was arrested yesterday by the Juhu police on the charge of abetment to suicide of actor Jiah Khan, after her mother alleged that the father-son duo drove her to the extreme step.

Police lodged a fresh FIR on Monday afternoon, naming Sooraj as the accused and booking him under Section 306 of IPC (abetment of suicide). Police sources claim that since the charge is non-bailable, they are likely to get his custody for a week, facilitating further interrogation.


`We have arrested Sooraj Pancholi under IPC section 306. We will produce him in court on Tuesday and demand police custody for further investigations,` said Arun Bhagat, senior inspector of Juhu police station.

After the arrest, Sooraj's father did not turn up at the police station. But his mother, actor Zareena Wahab, sister Sana and younger brother reached the station. The visibly tense family members refused to speak to the media.

The police action comes in the wake of a six-page letter penned by Jiah, which her mother Rabia Khan handed over to the cops. Based on the contents of the letter, the officers on Monday recorded the statements of Rabia and other family members who had alleged that Jiah's troubled relationship with Sooraj was the cause of her death.


Rabia had told the police that Jiah had been physically and mentally tortured by Sooraj, and his father Aditya, who had asked his son to stay away from her as she was older than him. She told the police that for the past two months Sooraj had been avoiding Jiah, as Aditya did not like her. She also said that on the day of her daughter's death, Aditya visited their house three hours later and Sooraj did not come at all.

Sooraj confirmed to the police that he had been trying to avoid Jiah but could not as she was in love with him and kept in contact. `I have given the police the letter and Sooraj has been arrested. I think the police have done their job sincerely,` said Rabia.

The police recorded Rabia's statement again and questioned her about the contents of Jiah's letter in her house. Sooraj was then asked about Jiah's abortion and physical torture, as mentioned in her letter. Sooraj confessed to both the allegations, based on which the cops arrested him.

A police officer, who is part of the investigation team, revealed that Sooraj said, `Jiah was pregnant and I suggested to her that she abort the child, as we were too young and I wanted to establish my career. We had fought several times on this.`


Rabia had on Sunday said that her family was not happy with the police investigations and had decided to make public the letter in which Jiah had written how her relation with her boyfriend had gone sour, and she did not want to live anymore. She accused him of ruining her life.

The police officers are waiting for the handwriting analysis report to establish that the letter had been written by Jiah herself, in order to make the case watertight.
