The buzz surrounding his new film, Hriday Shetty's Pal Tham Gaya is very positive. And at least three major production houses are considering him for their films.
But the ‘big bang' is elsewhere. Dattani has been finalised to star in an Indian remake of James Cameron's hugely popular hit Titanic. The film will be made in five Indian languages, and will be produced by a leading US production house.
"I'm not supposed to talk about it right now," says Sammir, "All I can tell you is that it's a freewheeling musical adaptation of Titanic. I'm very excited because Titanic has always been my favourite American film. I've watched it so many times that I know every moment by heart. I often wondered what it would be like to play Leonardo Di Caprio's role."
According to reliable sources, Dattani was selected as the desi version of Di Caprio from among a list of 35 young actors from Bollywood, including some topnotch names.
"But none of them possessed that particular blend of youth and vitality which made Di Caprio the loverboy of the millennium. Dattani has the right mix," says the head honcho of the production company.
"We haven't seen much of his work. We selected him on the basis of a music video in which he was endearingly different."
Sammir is guardedly ecstatic. "It feels good...no, great. I had no connections to the film industry when I came, but I guess everyone gets what they deserve. If Abhishek Bachchan is doing so well today it isn't because of his surname, but because of his talent and charisma," says Dattani.
