Director Ram Gopal Varma has said that he had been dreaming of making "Sarkar ", his latest project with Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan, for 25 years! He said that ever since he read about the mafia in Mario Puzo's epic book, "The Godfather ", he wanted to put it in the Indian context.

He also said that his decision to cast Abhishek Bachchan in the film had nothing to do with his father, Amitabh Bachchan.

He had observed Abhishek 's performance in "Naach " and had noticed his potential. "Sarkar ", he said, was not "exhibitionist fare " and it was the simplest film that he had ever made on an old-fashioned and classical design.
