Popular Britain-based singer Apache Indian had scores of bhangra fans rocking during appearances in two South African cities.

This week the singer, whose real name is Steven Kapur, was at a major nightlife spot in Johannesburg, Carfax, where Bhangra fans were thrilled at his performance.

"When we heard that Apache Indian was releasing a new album titled 'Time for Change' we felt we should also show some change here by bringing him here," said Deelan Moodaley, who promotes shows at Gauteng club venues regularly.

"We decided to do something different for our first venture at Carfax. A bhangra with an international artiste had never been done here before, so we brought him here and to Durban."

Moodaley said there was a larger than usual crowd, because of those who came in to see Apache Indian.

Moodaley also plans to bring other bhangra artistes.

"We found a gap in the market and are taking advantage of it," he said, commenting on the greater interest being shown in bhangra by white club goers.

"The white community is into Bollywood, with the movies being shown in cinemas and on television playing a big, big role in this. They enjoy it thoroughly, judging by the reaction I get at the shows I promote."

The last time Apache Indian was in Johannesburg, his show at Carnival City drew a very small audience probably because it was wrongly billed as a Bollywood type show and created different expectations.
