Renowned Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar should be honoured with Pakistan's highest civilian honour, an
Indian cultural group says.
In an open letter to Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf, the Sanatan Sanskriti Sansthan has said that Lata
should be considered for the "Nishan-e-Imtiaz" title, earlier conferred upon veteran Hindi film actor Dilip
Kumar.
"In the context of the coming anniversary of India and Pakistan's independence, it would be a fitting gesture if
you consider honouring Lata in the same manner as the government of Pakistan honoured Dilip Kumar," wrote
Jagjiwan Bakshi, who heads the organisation.
"Such a gesture would be lauded by the people of both the countries and would further contribute towards
improving bilateral ties."
Bakshi pointed out that there had been many attempts by those favouring India-Pakistan friendship to ensure
that Lata Mangeshkar should one day visit Pakistan.
"Unfortunately, this has not happened. Lata is the undoubted nightingale of India and her qualities as a singer
have found acceptance far and beyond. Not only in India and Pakistan but millions idolize her all around the
world."
Observing that India and Pakistan were continuing a slow but steady progress towards genuine friendship,
Bakshi recalled that Dilip Kumar was honoured with the Nishan-e-Imtiaz on the Independence Day of
Pakistan.
