Remo D'Souza on what it means to be a choreographer who wants to foray into filmmaking

For some reason, choreographers in Bollywood ultimately move to direction. Remo D'Souza is one of them and the 39-year-old claims to enjoy every bit of filmmaking. But he hasn't given up on choreography yet. The soft-spoken gentleman, who made his directorial debut with F.A.L.T.U and followed it up with ABCD: Anybody Can Dance, is collaborating with Karan Johar for his next. In a candid chat, he walks us through his professional and personal life.

What do you enjoy more--choreography or direction?
I'd say I'm far more comfortable being a choreographer than being a filmmaker. Choreography is like a second skin to me. I can't escape it. But at the same time, I'm fond of stories and like to convey them through dance and films. Directing a film has its share of headaches but it's worth every minute because it's a collaborative process.

Is a sequel to ABCD: Anybody Can Dance happening?
No doubt about it. We'll get going as soon as the script is ready. I feel more and more such dance-related films should be made in our country. The youth benefits a lot from such outlets.

Unlike other dance masters, how come you don't have a dance institute yet?
I'm quite sure that I won't be able to provide it as much attention as I would like to. Besides, what I'm aiming for is a school with branches across the country. I'm sure I'll be pursuing this vision in the near future when my plate is not as full as it is right now (smiles).

Bollywood is often blamed for the decline in classical dance. Your comment? I find it amusing when purists blame Hindi film industry for the lack of interest in classical dance forms. I truly believe that there is no decline in the number of kids opting for classical versions. In fact, thanks to the current reach of Bollywood and the variety it projects, a young aspirant has a better choice to make. Also, how can we neglect what forms the very core of dance? It's impossible to separate Bollywood dance from classical dance.

Is it true that Karan Johar is producing your next directorial venture and John Abraham will star in it?
No, not really. The one Karan is producing doesn't star John. I'm in talks with him for a completely different movie. Both of them are happening.

Lastly, why do you think Bollywood choreographers tend to be fat?
It's ironical, right? (Smiles). Choreography can be very hectic so the dance master piles on weight because s/he can't have food on time. Having said that, not all of them are unfit. Don't forget they are the brains behind the moves on the screen.
