Bollywood Trade quoted the wife of celebrated director Shekhar Kapur as saying: "It's probably the best time to be back in the movies."
"The culture of Indian films is changing. They are no longer the hero, heroine, villain and vamp-driven themes that directors typically peddled earlier. Actresses are not reduced to a pretty something. There's a sense of hope and freedom," she says.
In Ram Gopal Varma's film, Suchitra plays the role of Anil Kapoor's wife, "the kind you happen to meet in a building and say hello to but never quite know about the emotions and the complexities of her life".
The role happened when she called on old-time acquaintance Ram Gopal Varma and expressed her desire to take up meaningful roles.
Varma had something interesting in his kitty for her, and she says she didn't give a second thought lest she missed out on another opportunity of working with him.
"I was to play a cameo in 'Rangeela' in which I was supposed to play Jackie's love interest also called Suchitra. Jackie even mentions her name in one of the dialogues in the film.
"But I opted out of the film even before it went on the floor. So when I spoke to Ramuji this time, I told him clearly that I did not want to repeat the mistake again," recalls Suchitra.
