Earlier this year, Dharmesh Darshan made a rehash of B R Chopra's Gumrah, with Bewafaa.
But debutant director Sanjay Daima seems to have suitably adapted Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Bawarchi in his new comedy, Ramji Londonwale, which opens next week.
While the 1972 comedy starred Rajesh Khanna as the cook who spreads happiness in a surly household, Ramji Londonwale takes Madhavan to London, where his culinary skills win over new friends and influence people.
Says Madhavan, "Playing a character akin to Rajesh Khanna's in Bawarchi wasn't difficult at all. I'm basically friendly, so to win friends is easy for me.
But the cooking aspect is very strong in Ramji Londonwale. If Aishwarya Rai is the Mistress of Spices in Paul Mayeda Berges's film, I'm the Master of Spices in Ramji Londonwale."
The actor tries for modesty. "I can't be impudent enough to claim I'm remaking Bawarchi. But yes, my character in Ramji Londonwale is a homage to Rajesh Khanna in that film. I grew up watching the films of Hrihikesh Mukherjee. I don't know what happened to those kind of films. Let's bring that old, heartwarming feeling back."
