A number Bollywood stars have reportedly ‘bought' imported cars from a Delhi-based company called Vacation Tours and Travels.
The touring company had allegedly bought a scores of luxury vehicles taking advantage of the Export Promotion Capital Goods (EPCG) Scheme. Under the scheme, "touring companies can buy vehicles to promote tourism and get an exemption on 105 per cent duty on such cars'', said a DRI official.
But Suniel Shetty is not the only one from Bollywood to own a luxury car that was bought without paying lakhs in duty. Sanjay Dutt is under the scanner of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for owning a similar vehicle.
"We are trying to recover five more imported vehicles that are being used by some high-profile people in the city," said a senior official of DRI.
He added that raids would be conducted soon and recoveries would be completed within a week. DRI officials said that they are also trying to investigate if more such imported vehicles are being brought into the country through other means.
DRI has recovered 45 of 55 foreign made cars reportedly brought into the country through illegal channels. Attempts are also being made to trace the rest of the cars.
Officials said that some of the cars were recovered from Hyderabad, Gurgaon and Pune after the alleged kingpin of the 'imported car racket', Sanjay Bhandari, was arrested in August.
Officials had discovered that Bhandari, who claimed to be owner of two non-existent hotels in Rajasthan, had allegedly obtained a licence from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) for importing luxury cars to cater to foreign clients but later sold them.
In a similar recovery, two cars were seized from Chandan Basu, son of former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu.
