Priyan plans a big epic period film—"my first since Kala Pani "—about the Chau dancers of Orissa and Bihar who took on the might of the British Colonizers through the dance form.
Explains the versatile director, "Chau was also a form of martial arts. The Chau dancers fought back the Britishers but were finally decimated systematically for their rebellious streak. It's a project for Percept Pictures and requires lots of planning. I plan to take a break after the Kareena-Shahid film that I'm shooting right now. Let's see how my two children(Kyun Ki and Garam Masala) perform in the exams."
The film on Chau dancers would be Priyan's most complex film to date and his first historical. Two years ago he was planning a film on the life of the freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad with Abhishek Bachchan . "But that didn't work out," sighs the fatigued Priyan as he looks into the final prints of his 2 Diwali releases. "But this film on Chau dancers has me all charged."
The prolific Priyadarshan has completed 60 films! He has finally found a title for his new Kareena-Shahid starrer which he's currently completing. "I want to call it Khatta Meetha. I'm a great fan of Basu Chatterjee and Hrishikesh Mukherjee's middle-of-the-road comedies. In fact I wanted to name Malaamal Express—my next release in December—as Gol Mal, after Hrishida's classic. Now I want the title Khatta Meetha for my Kareena-Shahid film.. But someone else has the rights."
For a filmmaker, no matter how prolific, two releases on the same day is no joke. Priyadarshan who has the two antithetically mooded films Kyun Ki and Garam Masala up for release simulataneously on 2 November, is in a surprisingly jovial mood.
"People ask me which of the two is my favourite. It's like asking a father which he likes more, his son or daughter. Garam Masala being the more virile of the two is like my son. Kyun Ki is softer gentler and more sensitive. It comes straight from my heart. Garam Masala required no contribution from my heart. It's a straightoff 'Priyadarshan' kind of formula film," he tells you bluntly.
So is he nervous?
"My twin births on 2nd November are my 61st and 62nd release. Do you think I can afford to get nervous at this stage? Earlier for my first 30 films I'd lose two days of my life over every film. After that I realized a film has its own fate. I want both Garam Masala and Kyun Ki to do well. But if you ask me to choose then I'll have to go with Kyun Ki. It's very very close to my heart. It's in league with my films like Kala Pani and Viraasat. If it works I want to get more experimental."
