"He is suffering from colitis, inflammation of the colon in the left side of the large intestine," Narendra Trivedi, vice president of Lilavati Hospital, where Bachchan was admitted Monday night, told.
He said Bachchan could be discharged in a day or two. "His general condition is absolutely stable and he is comfortable."
Bachchan, 63, admitted to the executive suite on the 11th floor of the hospital, was being treated by family physician Jayant Barve by injections and oral tablets.
"He is mobile and fully conscious. We have kept him on liquid diet. He walked around his room for some time today," Trivedi said.
Bachchan was brought here from Delhi, where he was first admitted to the Escorts Hospital following complaints of stomach ache.
As Bachchan recuperated at the hospital, his fans offered special prayers for him at the Siddhivinayak temple in the city for his speedy recovery.
