The film's earlier title Blue Film was changed to Kalyug. Mohit confirms, "Yes it was titled Blue Film. It is a sex-tone film but with an even bolder subject than Murder or Jism. We realised the title would create problems and so we changed it."
Mohit who is the nephew of Mahesh Bhatt and cousin of Emraan Hashmi started his career by assisting film director Vikram Bhatt.
Speaking about his film Kalyug, he reveals, "It is one man's story against the bizarre world of pornography. Actually, it is a pure romantic film of a husband and wife who go on a honeymoon and their nights are filmed and sold as DVDs in the market.
This leads to various incidents and Kunal, the protagonist of the film, tries to unravel the deep dark secrets of this world."
The plot of the film has been inspired by the various MMS scandals of the recent past.
He also reveals, "There were these scandals in Ludhiana where honeymooning couples were filmed on the sly and the DVDs were sold as blue films." The film aims to throw light on the problem of pornography and Mohit feels that this subject has not been explored by Bollywood.
Mohit says that the film has been based on extensive research and not on a single scandal.
His sister, Smilie will be playing the lead role in the film and is the wife of Kunal Khemu. "I wanted a vulnerable, simple girl for the role. I had written the script with her in mind," says Mohit. He later claimed that he received several threat calls from the mafia.
"I was threatened by the local mafia in Amsterdam and other places so finally I completed my film in Zurich. Luckily for me, I had no trouble in India. My film was passed with an ‘A' certificate without a single cut," he said.
Mohit is now planning his next venture Awaarapan to be based on the life of actress Parveen Babi. "I have not finalised the cast yet," he says.
