He lamented that nowadays everybody wants to be the 'Indian Idol' for the sake of fame and money and not for the sheer joy of becoming the greatest singer.
He said it was all right to dedicate one's win to his or her family members, but the winner should also think of moving up and achieving something in society.
As he introduced the ten Mumbai finalists, among the total 28, he stated that, ''I am a practical man and look up to people with genuine art. Moreover, telling the truth (as to where they stand in the competition) will help them pursue other options as careers, instead of wasting time on singing.''
The second edition of 'Indian Idol' having 28 finalists, comprises an equal number of girls who are slated to give a tough competition to their male counterparts, Malik added.
However, the music director said the finalists whom the three judges (Sonu Nigam, Farha Khan and himself) have shortlisted are all ''genuine gems.''
''We have a lovely mix of talent in this second edition of the competition with some having classical-based experience while others are more into pop music. The contest is going to be very hard this time,'' he quipped. Meanwhile, the 'Indian Idol Series-2' will be telecast on Sony Entertainment channel from December 12.
