Dhiveja Sundrum

Dhiveja was born in Pietermaritzburg, but grew up in Durban and Cape Town. South Africa is a country rich in history, with incredible weather, magnificent beaches, natural resources and is known for its beautiful rainbow nation of people. Dhiveja is a medical student who is hoping to qualify at the end of the year. She will then start her internship and community service, her ambition is to specialise in obstetrics & gynaecology. Hobbies & sporting interests are: travelling, reading, music, dance (salsa, latin & basic ballroom), hiking, kata boxing (a training exercise in karate) and loves cooking. Personal motto would be “always be true to yourself, no matter how hard it may be. Even though life’s experiences may sometime be scary, never let an opportunity pass you by.”

How would you describe yourself in three words?
Vivacious, spontaneous, sincere

Do you have a special or unusual talent? (what is it?)
It’s not a talent in the conventional sense, but I have a special ability to set people at ease, and make them comfortable talking about who they are, and to engage in laughter. After all, laughter is a universal language.

Where would you most like to visit in the world and why?
I have been very fortunate to have travelled extensively and it has opened my eyes to a global community. When I have the opportunity to travel again. I would like to go somewhere unconventional, and unusual and experience different customs. For example – I would like to go to the netherlands and attempt to walk in clogs! I’ve seen photos and have always wondered what it would be like.

What is the best thing about your country?
South africa is the land of opportunity at the moment. Our government is doing its utmost to ensure equality among all races and between genders. Our people are very tolerant and compassionate towards diversity. No dream is too big, that cannot be filled in South Africa.

What is your favourite…..
Film:
'A Beautiful Mind' and bollywood - 'Bhagbhan'
Music: Hip hop, R&B and classical jazz
Singer/band: Mariah Carey
Book: 'The God of Small Things' by Arundathi Roy

If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
It would be a cure for aids, as well as a greater awareness of the disease. It is one of the biggest problems facing humanity.

If you were stuck on a desert island with one other person (famous or not) whom would you choose?
I would choose someone who speaks a different language. This would allow us to learn from each other. It would be a true test of humanity of how we could get along and get over the language barrier and prove that it would not be such a barrier after all.

What is your message to all the other miss world contestants?
I am very privileged to be part of the multi-faceted diversity of south africa. I have a rich indian heritage but I am so proud to be south african.

You’re judging the final five contestants, which question would you ask the finalists?
Which one of the four final contestants standing with you would most like to win and why?
