Where did you grow up? Tell us a little about your home town/city, and family.
I grew up in Liverpool, England. Liverpool is a great City and has just been awarded the Capital of Culture 2008. Everyone in Liverpool is very proud as we have some of the most beautiful buildings in the world. We are also home to two of the greatest football teams Liverpool and Everton. Of course Liverpool will be best known for the Beatles. I live with my mum Jackie and dad Arthur. My brother Matthew is 18.
What Jobs have you done? What was the most interesting/bizarre?
During my work experience I went to a local hotel to find out if I wanted to continue with my Sports Science/Physical Education. It was good fun and I felt very grown up and responsible, and having to test the pool for the correct chemical balance also working on reception greeting clients and showing them around the gym. I also worked in a friend’s florist helping make up bouquets and tidying up. After qualifying from the Northern School of Beauty as a Beautician and Nail Technician together with Indian Head Massage and Full Body Massage, I opened my own beauty shop as I gained my confidence back I started to enter Beauty Competitions again. As some of the competitions took me away out of the country, I decided to close the business and concentrate on my main ambition modelling.
The most bizarre job I had was a promotional job for a well-known soft drinks company. It was bizarre as I had to wear a bright orange outfit made up of a pair of hot pants, boob tube and black knee high boots. I had to ride around York City on a bright orange scooter handing out cans and I got quite a few stares, but it was good fun!
What are your career ambitions, how do you plan to realise them?
I am currently using my title of Miss England to promote my hometown Liverpool in the build up to 2008 having been awarded the Capital of Culture. I am in the process of completing a calendar in which I promote every landmark in Liverpool. This can be sold to the thousand of tourists who visit Liverpool every month. As I am supporting Women’s Aid and the Variety Club, I have asked that a percentage of the money made, go to these two special charities.
I would like to continue with my modelling career and hopefully, eventually, be an ambassador to Liverpool. I eventually would like to be involved in TV presenting, which would allow me to visit all the countries participating in Miss World and promote them to everyone in the World. This would be a perfect opportunity to work with the contestant from that country to raise money for disabled or disadvantaged children.
What is the proudest moment of your life? (Not including winning your National Title)
The proudest moment for me was regaining my confidence back. Two years ago I was attacked, pulled out of my car and dragged along the road, as the car was still moving. I was so badly bruised, cut and lost most of my hair, it has taken many months of counselling and help and support from many people, including my family, friends and support groups like Women’s Aid, who I support and raise money for. Now I feel very proud to have the courage to continue with my dream.
What was the funniest/most embarrassing moment of your life?
The funniest moment of my life was when I was promoting for a well-known soft drink’s company. As I mentioned earlier, apart from having to wear a bright orange outfit and drive around on a bright orange scooter I had to stop the scooter outside an arena where everyone was queuing to see Atomic Kitten. I pulled up on my bright orange scooter, took off my bright orange helmet and aimed to pull the scooter back on its support in order for me to hand out cans of drink to everyone in the queue from the seat of the scooter. Yes you guessed right I could not pull the scooter back to rest and the scooter fell the drinks went everywhere and so did the helmet much to the delight of the hundreds of people in the queue! A very kind man came over and picked up the scooter put in on its stand and I tried to look professional and pick up what was left of the cans. I had to complete this run over and over again until the concert started so I had to drive up to where the nice kind man was and asked him to lift the scooter each time. I was completely exhausted by the time I was finished and very red faced!
How has your life changed since winning your National Title?
I have been extremely busy since winning Miss England, attending interviews, photo shoots, and charity events and answering many emails of congratulations I have received from people all over the World. I am currently organising a charity dinner in aid of Women’s Aid and the Variety Club.
What would you like to do, if you became Miss World 2004?
I would like to use the title to allow me to help and support all the children around the world, who lived in poverty and do not have the same choices as many other children have when it comes to where they live, or what, if anything they can eat that day. Some children have to work as early as 3 years of age due to the poverty in which their family has to live. They work all day scouring rubbish tips digging with their bare hands hoping to find something they can sell to allow them to eat or drink. What upsets me more is that when you see these children they are always smiling. They are happy to play with a stone or old tyre and you hardly see them cry. Imagine what they would do if you offered them a decent meal or a new toy to play with.
I would also like to highlight the fact than 1 in 4 women suffer domestic violence at some point in their lifetime. Women’s Aid offers a 24-hour lifeline service and in 2003 answered 17,000 calls and over 500 requests for help and advice via email. Unfortunately 88,500 calls could not be answered due to lack of resources. I would like to raise money and allow Women’s Aid to continue fully resourced to help victims.
If you had a personal motto what would it be?
Life is too short so enjoy every minute of it whilst you can, but never be afraid to ask for help. Another motto of my mum’s, which she has said every one in the world should use, is "TEAM", meaning: Together, Everyone, Achieves, More
Give details of any charitable work undertaken?
My mum’s friend and colleague was diagnosed with cancer and everyone was devastated but most of all her husband and her 4 young children. I helped mum and a group of her friends organise a charity night at which we held an auction raised £3,500.Sadly soon after another friend of the family was diagnosed with cancer so we organised a 24hour Squashathon in our local Cricket Club. It was very tiring but worth every penny raised, which was £1,800.The last two years, I raised a total of £1,200 for the Variety Club or Women’s Aid and I have raised a further total of £1,120.I also took part in many fashion shows for charities. I presented a cheque to Women’s Aid today in London for £2,500, which was raised at this year’s Miss England Event.
