Wai Man Queenie Chu

Age:23
Occupation: Intern News Reporter
Height: 174

Where did you grow up? Tell us a little about your home town/city, and family.
Although I was the only child in my family, I grew up surrounded by relatives. I have eight aunts and uncles on my mother’s side alone, so there were always family members around while I was growing up. I was born in Hong Kong and lived there until I was 18 years old when I left for the United States to pursue my college education.

Hong Kong was a British colony for 100 years and is an interesting mix of both Eastern and Western cultures. It is very densely populated for its size, so Hong Kong has many skyscrapers and tall apartment buildings.

What Jobs have you done? What was the most interesting/bizarre?
While I was a college student in the United States, I worked different part-time jobs. Not only did this help pay for my college tuition, it allowed me to get to know the language and culture there better. Those jobs provided me with unique experiences, but the most interesting job I’ve had was an internship I did last summer at a local Hong Kong television station as a news reporter. I studied Political Communication in college, so this was a fascinating experience that gave me the opportunity to see first hand how the media worked.

What are your career ambitions, how do you plan to realise them?
My goal is to develop a successful career as an actress. From there, I would like to move into directing and making movies with messages that are meaningful and influential. Eventually, I would like to run for political office in Hong Kong. My hope is that my public exposure through acting combine with my educational background will enable me to enter politics. I want to have a fulfilling career that allows me to make a difference and contribute to society. In the meantime, I will continue to study politics while working in the media to prepare myself to make the career move when the time is right.

What is the proudest moment of your life? (Not including winning your National Title)
The proudest moment in my life was when I received my college diploma form the University of Washington in the United States. I graduated in March of this year with a bachelor’s degree in Political Communication and a minor in political Science.

What was the funniest/most embarrassing moment of your life?
My most embarrassing moment happened when I was an intern news reporter in Hong Kong last summer. An experienced colleague and I were sent to a press conference held by the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Mr Tung Chi Wa, just a few days after I started the internship.

The press conference was full of reporters from different media organizations. The Information Officer walked in followed by Mr. Tung. All the reporters started raising their hands to ask Mr. Tung questions. They were quite aggressive, but I was shy and a little nervous because this was my first press conference. I just stood next to the camera with my paper and pen.

I noticed that the Information Officer, the one who called on reporters to ask questions, kept looking at me. I was being nice and smiled at her the whole time. I guess I sent her the wrong message that I wanted to ask a question. Suddenly she said, "The lady in the the white shirt and black skirt - do you want to ask a question?" The conference hall went silent and everyone looked at me. I could feel my heart beating strongly, and my face turned red. I replied, "Sorry I don’t have any questions to ask yet." The hall went from complete silent to loud laughter. Mr. Tung and the Information Officer looked at me with a friendly smile, but I am sure they were shocked. I just ‘hid’ behind the camera quietly. Later that day, some of the reporters told me that one of the local TV news stations was broadcasting the press conference live. Luckily they did not show my face and my company logo.

How has your life changed since winning your National Title?
Since winning my national title, life has been fun, interesting and very busy! I have attended many different functions from magazine or newspaper photo shoots to music award ceremonies to visiting a Chinese army camp. I would not have been able to do any of these thing had I not competed in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant.

Tell us about an interesting event you have attended, or a person that you have met.
In an event leading up to the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, I had a chance to play water polo with six famous Hong Kong celebrities. One of them was a former athlete on the Hong Kong National Swimming Team. It was an interesting event because we were basically not following the rules. There were eight girls on my team and four of them did not know how to swim. And most of us were a lot shorter than the men. We were losing the game badly at the beginning until the men started joking around. They started catching and passing the ball with their feet. When they let go the ball, they would pass it to the girls on purpose. Finally my team won by one point. It was the most friendly and fun match I have ever had.

What would you like to do, if you became Miss World 2004?
If I became Miss World 2004, I would do my best to promote understanding and tolerance among the world’s different cultures and religions. Technology continues to make the world smaller, but there is still a great deal of misunderstanding and hate born of ignorance in it. In the past, such a goal may have sounded cliché. However, in light of today’s terrorist threats and the motives that are behind terrorism, it is clear that the world needs mutual understanding and tolerance now more than ever. Having grown up in a unique city that bridges the gap between two very different cultures, and having lived and studied abroad, I think I would be well suited to be an ambassador in this role. I would also like to promote causes that help disadvantaged people in impoverished nations, such as funding for education and health care.

If you had a personal motto what would it be?
I’ve tried to plan my life so that each step will build on the previous ones and bring me closer to a career I will find satisfying and fulfilling. If I had a personal motto, it would be this: Decide what things you enjoy doing most in life, and then figure out a way to make a happy and successful living doing them.

Give details of any charitable work undertaken?
While a contestant in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, I participated in a fund-raising event for the needy. I also performed a catwalk show to raise funds for the Hong Kong Wai Yan Association, which is a charitable organization. I also helped promote awareness of depression since this illness was only made aware in my country in the late 1990’s.

I was the President of the Hong Kong Student Union and visited a facility that cared for the elderly. I participated in fund-raising activities for non-profit organizations. While acting as the college student-government Senator of Budget and Publicity, I worked for specific causes such as anti-racism and educating the public about issues concerning homosexuality.
