Hollywood actor Tom Cruise has been sued by screenwriter Timothy Patrick McLanahan for $1 billion (approx Rs. 6,250cr), for supposedly plagiarising the script of his 2011 flick, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, which is Tom’s highest-grossing film.
According to court documents obtained by Radar Online, McLanahan has claimed that he came up with the concept of the movie when he wrote the screenplay titled Head On in 1998.
McLanahan has alleged that after submitting the script to the US Copyright Office, Head On received a copyright certificate protecting its material and author from unauthorised use.
McLanahan asserted that he immediately recognised the scripts for the 51-year-old actor's movie had been illegally written and produced from his 1998 copyright.
Along with Cruise, McLanahan has also filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures and talent agency William Morris Agency, which supposedly forwarded his script without his knowledge to Cruise's rep Creative Artist Agency.
