MacKenzie Scott, well-known as the ex-wife of Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has donated more than $4 billion in four months after announcing $1.7 billion in gifts.
She is one of the wealthiest females in the world, largely due to her $38 billion divorce settlement. Well, now people were speculating what she has done with such an ample amount of money. Now, Ms. Scott has officially announced on December 15 that in the past four months, she has donated approximately $4.2 billion to 384 organizations.
The world's 18th-richest person, MacKenzie posted a blog on Medium and revealed that she has given in charity close to a total of $6 billion in order to financially support the groups from the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic. In the post, she wrote, "This pandemic has been a wrecking ball in the lives of Americans already struggling. Economic losses and health outcomes alike have been worse for women, for people of color and for people living in poverty. Meanwhile, it has substantially increased the wealth of billionaires."
Well, her donation has helped the organization to arrange food banks, meals on wheels for the hungry, and other basic amenities for the underprivileged and to those people who are suffering from the pandemic.
She has also said that in the past four months, she had given away in charity $4,158,500,000 worth of gifts to 384 organizations across all 50 states, namely Puerto Rico, and Washington D.C. Scott also set up a team to help people and also sought suggestions from funders, non-profit organizers and experts from the field. She also conducted a data analysis by experts that kept their eyes on the community's needs.
Well, 50 years old pledged to make donations out of her wealth in 2019. She wrote in her Giving Pledge, "I have a disproportionate amount of money to share. My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won't wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty." On the other side, her Medium post also mentioned that she had initially listed some 6,500 organizations to gift her wealth to, but ultimately narrowed it down to 384 groups.
According to Melissa Berman, chief executive officer of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, "Scott's gifts this year approach $6 billion, which has to be one of the biggest annual distributions by a living individual to working charities."
Scott King, the executive director for Meals on Wheels of Tampa, said he didn't even apply for the grant they received. Instead, her team contacted the nonprofit, which delivers food to about 850 homes and makes about 2,600 meals each day.
Well, her 'Giving Pledge', committing to give at least half of her wealth to charity. Scott is included in Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2020. Her act has surely made her a great activist and social worker, she also inspired other people to contribute their wealth in the pandemic to help needy communities around the world.
