Coronavirus has undoubtedly, hit the entire world with its horrifying effects and people were awaiting the COVID-19 vaccine since march. And now when it seems that the wait is finally over and the medical experts have come with a solution, masses are now stepping back from getting vaccinated!
As per the latest reports, the US healthcare workers who are first in the queue to receive the vaccine are now refusing to get them vaccinated.
Earlier this week, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine revealed that about 60 per cent of the nursing home workers in his state have so far chosen not to get vaccinated. More than half of New York City's EMS workers have shown skepticism, The Post reported last month. Not only that, reportedly, the health care workers of California and Texas are also choosing to take the back step. An estimated 50 per cent of frontline workers in Riverside County in the Golden State opted against the drug, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing public health officials.
And surprisingly, political reasons are also being stated for not trying the vaccine as in the Lone Star State, a doctor at Houston Memorial Medical Center told NPR earlier this month that half the nurses in the facility would not get the vaccine, citing political reasons.
The excuse shared by the Texas nurses was echoed in a recent Kaiser Family Foundation survey that found 29 per cent of health workers were "vaccine-hesitant," the Times reported.
People have also become quite stronger since COVID hit the society as now they think themselves capable of going through the pandemic without the vaccine. A pregnant nurse at a California hospital, who chose not to get vaccinated stated that she and her co-workers do not need the vaccine to make it through the current situation. "I feel people think, 'I can still make it until this ends without getting the vaccine,'" April Lu, a 31-year-old nurse at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, told the Times.
This large amount of vaccine refusal not only among the health care workers but also among the general public can cause a huge problem, Harvard epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch told the newspaper. "Our ability as a society to get back to a higher level of functioning depends on having as many people protected as possible," said Marc Lipsitch.
