In an unusual incident in the Kalahandi region of Odisha, a marriage event captured the headlines when so many angles in the story lead to the police joining at the end. Actually, when the marriage ceremony was held on Tuesday evening, the bride ran away with her boyfriend and left the groom kept waiting.

But, this is not the end of the story. Since their daughter eloped, the girl's family offered their younger daughter to marry that groom. And he accepted that proposal and got married to the 15-year-old younger sister.

"The teen, who was studying for her Class 10 exam, luckily, was released and handed over to her brother", Kalahandi district child protection officer Sukanti Behera said. However neither bride's family nor the groom's parents were conscious of the fact that child marriage is unlawful, she added.

Behera further said that after the counseling, the girl chose to remain in her parents' house and to appear for the test. 'A counseling meeting was arranged for all the families. No case was reported against them. They decided not to consecrate the girl's marriage until she acquired the marriageable age of 18 years.

That being said, shortly after his marriage to the minor child, the district administration arrived at his house and took back the bride. The Jaipatna Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) along with the police team reached the groom's house at Tentulikhunti.

When asked about the occurrence, the girl's father admitted that he regulated her younger daughter's wedding because of peer pressure.
