To heal, you used up 1,44,000 liters of oxygen. Here, plant ten trees to return to nature." On a Nagpur hospital discharge summary, this is an appeal made to a Covid-19 patient. After a week in the intensive care unit, the patient, a 41-year-old lady, had stabilized.
"I have resolved to plant and conserve even more than 10 trees this year. Covid-19 made me realize the cost and importance of oxygen that we get free of cost from nature," said the lady, who was released from getting well from the hospital on April 22. The hospital has also begun noting the amount of oxygen supplied to a recovering Covid-19 patient, along with an appeal to plant and save at least 10 trees after treatment.
According to the hospital's director, Dr. Rajesh Swarnakar, people don't realize the importance of oxygen until it is urgently needed and in short supply.
He added, "We take nature for granted. This is the most appropriate time to make people realize the importance of planting trees which not only give us oxygen to live but also clear the polluted air."
Dr. Swarnakar got the idea from a prescription that just went viral on social media. A doctor actually wrote on the order that the patient plant one tree after recovery.
Nagpur used to be a truly green city, and he believes that this identity must be preserved. "I was brought up on Neeri campus as my father was a scientist. We grew among thick green foliage. While we are criticizing oxygen shortage in hospitals and cribbing about ventilator bills, how many of us realize that we take nature for granted which gives us free oxygen to breathe" he added.
